About
I'm Faye, a mixed media artist from New Zealand. My creativity has taken many paths over the years. I have studied photography in my hometown, Christchurch and pottery in Kerikeri. I have exhibited my photography, abstract paintings, fibre artworks and jewellery in group shows around New Zealand. I have run my own business selling my inspirational poetry on a variety of products in gift shops and galleries around New Zealand. I published three books of my poetry and had my poetry published in various magazines. The art technique that I am focusing on at present is cyanotype printing. You can read more about the cyanotype technique in the cyanotype menu link.As a young child I was mostly nonverbal and very shy. Creativity was my way to escape from the world and also to communicate with the world. Many years later, as an adult, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. And yes, creativity is still both an escape and communication method for me!The name of my business, Woven Fairy, came about because Faye means fairy and I weave a little fairy magic into everything I create. The natural world inspires my art a lot as it's where I can be myself... nature is magical to me.

Cyanotype
Cyanotype is a type of camera-less photography that is created by mixing two chemicals together (Potassium Ferricyanide and Ferric Ammonium Citrate); painting the mixed solution onto a suitable paper and exposing the paper to UV light from the sun or a UV lamp. Then the paper is washed in water and allowed to dry creating a cyanotype print that is a unique and original artwork in shades of Prussian blue and white.Cyanotypes can be created using objects, either natural or man-made, and these are called photograms. Or by using digital negatives to create cyanotype photo prints. Most of my artwork is created using the photogram technique and I mostly work with nature and plant material.I love bringing the beauty of natural objects and plant life into people's lives and homes through my art. I am currently experimenting with hand-colouring some of my cyanotype prints to give them a delicate touch of colour.
